WITH MARCY BRAVERMAN GOLDSTEIN, PH.D.

This is a Heart Fire Yoga Collective 300HR Advanced Studies Teacher Training module. They are open to all, you do not need to be enrolled in our 300-hour program to take this training. Full attendance required for 300-hour credit.

July 18-19, 2020

Facilitator: Marcy Braverman Goldstein, Ph.D, Guest Facilitator: Jaimis Huff

What are the oldest postures and which ones were made up yesterday?  Was the Buddha a yogi? When did asana practice reach the US? To what extent are our received stories about yoga history romanticized “alternative fact”?  Explore these questions and more in a whirlwind tour of texts, teachers, and traditions from 2500 B.C.E. to the ever-changing modern moment.  You will gain new ways to think through the (mis/dis)information and “fake news” about yoga and other unfolding personal and community histories.

Our deep dive into yoga’s history and its current unfolding will combine studying the past, looking at the present, and imagining the future.  Additionally we will integrate training about ethical/yogic speech so that we responsibly and confidently participate in written and verbal conversations about “what happened.”

Each day we will begin learning about history through lecture and group discussion (jnana-yoga, i.e. knowledge-yoga).  Saturday and Sunday will feature Chronological Asana Flow (co-led by Jaimis and Marcy).  All days will include small group work, and time for personal reflection, meditation, and journaling.

Join us to deepen your knowledge and develop your voice so that you too can help to determine the direction of yoga in the 21st century.

CURRICULUM:

  • Learn about the texts, teachers, and traditions in yoga’s 5000+ year history.

  • Become knowledgeable about the past in order to contribute productively to discussions about what yoga is and can become.

  • Identify the information, mis- and dis-information embedded in received histories of yoga; dissect facts from fictions.

  • Encounter some of yoga history’s most colorful and influential teachers.  Discover fascinating and even contested details about yoga’s origins, history, philosophies, and future.

  • Participate in a class where people come together despite and because of our differences to create something bigger than any of us can create from within our separate echo chambers.

  • Embrace the fact that the study of history reveals an essential part of being human and is thus part of an ethically grounded and evolving yoga journey.

  • History is told by people who read, write, speak, and remember powerful words about “what happened.”  As part of our studies, we will dwell on ethical speech: is yours aligned with truth? Is it beneficial?  Are you being silenced? Are you silencing others?

  • Chronological Asana Flow:  a sequence that reflects the asanas as they appeared in texts and art throughout the millennia.  Co-taught by Jaimis and Marcy.

  • Time to integrate learning through journaling, meditation, and small group work.
